EU Funding for the Green Transition: Understanding Funding Logic and Improving Your Project’s Fit for EU Funding

For organisations developing a climate or environmental project, EU funding can be a meaningful opportunity to strengthen impact and scale.

However, before investing significant time and internal resources into proposal development, it is essential to understand how EU funding instruments are structured – and how your project needs to be positioned to align with them.

With the EU Green Deal shaping priorities across climate action, energy transition, biodiversity, circular economy and regional development, substantial funding is available.

At the same time, the EU funding landscape can feel complex and difficult to navigate – especially at an early exploration stage.

Programmes are designed for different purposes. They follow distinct intervention logics and require specific levels of maturity, partnership structures and implementation capacity.

This workshop is designed to help you understand these underlying structures and assess how your project idea can be aligned more effectively with the appropriate EU funding instruments, thereby strengthening your strategic positioning and enabling you to move forward in a well-informed and structured way.

What you’ll gain from this workshop

By the end of the session, you will:

Workshop approach

The workshop includes guided, interactive exercises where participants practise matching real project examples – and their own project ideas – to appropriate EU funding instruments.

Together, we will analyse:

  • The underlying logic of different programmes
  • Typical alignment gaps
  • How projects can be framed or further developed to meet EU expectations

The group is deliberately limited in size to allow discussion, structured reflection and practical exchange.

The objective is to help you move forward in a more informed and strategically sound way – whether that means refining your concept, strengthening certain components, or choosing the most suitable funding pathway.

This workshop is particularly suitable for you if ...

  • You are new to EU funding or at an early exploration stage
  • Work in a climate-, energy-, environmental, or sustainability-focused organisation, public authority, or SME based in the EU
  • Are developing a project idea with clear climate or environmental relevance
  • You want to understand how to position your project more effectively within the EU funding landscape
  • You aim to make informed strategic decisions before investing time in proposal drafting

No prior experience with EU funding is required.

This workshop is not designed for you if ...

  • You are already drafting a specific EU proposal and require detailed technical or administrative guidance
  • You are looking for hands-on proposal writing support
  • You need Call-specific interpretation or partner search services
  • Your organisation is based outside of the EU

The focus of this session is strategic orientation and funding fit strengthening at an early stage.

Hello, I’m Astrid,

I have been working in EU funding and policy for over 20 years, supporting organisations in securing EU grants across a wide range of fields – from social inclusion and environmental sustainability to research and innovation.

Through workshops, trainings and hands-on advisory support, I have helped many small and medium-sized organisations – including NGOs, public bodies and companies – take their first confident steps into the EU funding landscape and develop successful funding strategies and proposals.

I am a committed advocate for sustainability and have been closely engaged with European environmental policies and funding programmes for many years. My work builds on hands-on experience across EU policy and funding instruments, including roles linked to EU Structural Funds, Horizon Europe and National Contact Point activities, as well as work within and alongside EU institutions and agencies.

Drawing on this experience, this workshop is designed to make EU funding more accessible and to support environmental and sustainability actors in taking their work further with the help of EU funding.
